What will it cost? There is no cost to participate in Wai Care and groups are fully resourced to carry out water quality testing and stream habitat assessments by the programme. This includes providing all the testing and safety equipment you need and a manual which gives lots of background about streams. Training in use of the equipment and guidance on planning and carrying out a monitoring plan is provided as well.
Due to current resourcing constraints, the programme is limited in the number of groups and people it can support at one time. We would of course love to see many, many people out montioring water quality and taking action to improve stream environments, so if you have an interest and want to find out if Wai Care is for you, contact the Wai Care Coordinator for your city.
What do the coordinators provide?
The role of the coordinators is to provide support for schools and community groups undertaking Wai Care water quality monitoring programs and activities in the Auckland Region. Coordinators work in specific council areas – Auckland City, North Shore City, Manukau City, Waitakere City, Papakura District and Rodney District. At present, there are 9 Wai Care Coordinators. We also have a Regional Coordinator, who is responsible for the coordination of the network and maintaining funding and support partnerships. To find out who the Wai Care Coordinator is in your area, see Contact Us page. Some of the things coordinators can provide include:
- training in monitoring and assessing the health of your local water resources
- help in understanding your water quality data
- education for students, community groups and individuals in the field or in class situations
- help to plan and implement action-based activities to improve the health of your water environment and catchment
- access to resource material on a range of water related topics
- opportunities to get involved in water-related events and activities
