Data Information
What Data do we collect?
Wai Care groups collect data of a wide variety of parameters. The most common tests performed are those measuring temperature, turbidity, pH, phosphate, nitrate, dissolved oxygen and macroinvertebrates. The tests you choose to undertake will be based on the type of pollution you expect to find in your stream. You may decide to focus your efforts on one particular parameter. For example, if your group has concerns regarding algal blooms, then you should concentrate on monitoring phosphates and nitrates.

Why is data collected?
Groups design monitoring programs for a variety of reasons. A school group may design a program that is for education and awareness purposes, whilst a community group might monitor to assess environmental impacts on their site. Wai Care Coordinators will assist you in implementing the right monitoring program.

How can you be sure that your data is accurate?
The aquatic environment is complex and there will often be variation between the actual and test values. This is called sampling error. The key to good quality information is ensuring that your sampling and test procedures are followed carefully. Poor quality samples and inadequate procedures won’t give you good results, it doesn’t matter how sophisticated your testing equipment. If you want to use your information for formal reporting then developing your own quality assurance plan is essential.
