ARC
The Auckland Regional Council is responsible for helping to make the Auckland region a great place to live. This means looking after the things that Aucklanders care most about - our coasts, beaches and natural environment. You could say we’re Auckland’s environmental guardian.

Our role is to protect the region's air, soil and water resources from pollution and to ensure their sustainable use as Aucklanddevelops and its population grows. We also manage the growing demands on the region's transport systems, and support public transport services.

We have over 3000km of coastline and beaches, waterways, land and groundwater resources to protect so we really have our work cut out! Our mission is to achieve high standards of water quality, beaches that are safe for swimming and clean air and land.

Leading the way on key regional issues
The region’s population grows by 49 people a day, so by 2050, there could be two million people living and working across the region. The ARC plans and coordinates the Regional Growth Strategy the Regional Land Transport Strategy and various other environmentally focused regional plans such as the Air Land and Water Plan, to ensure that growth is sustainable and that it takes place without adverse effects on the environment or the diverse communities of the region.

As Auckland grows it becomes increasingly important to retain the values in our culture. Outdoor recreational opportunities where people can experience and learn from their contact with the environment are important to Aucklanders. The ARC provides a regional parks network which contains more than 37,000 hectares of land, ranging from the Ericsson Stadium to sandy beaches and remote wilderness areas, like the Hunua Ranges and amazing West Coast beaches.

Working in partnership to make it happen
The ARC does not manage the effect of growth alone. Many private and public organisations are responsible for providing the infrastructure necessary to accommodate and manage the impacts of growth, such as energy networks, transport systems, water and sewerage. There are also many others which manage the provision of social infrastructure like schools and hospitals. Business groups, such as land developers, also have an important part to play.

We work in partnerships with these groups to make things happen.

We are here for our community
  • The key group for the ARC is the residents of the Auckland region. What the region will ultimately look like is up to our wider regional community. It is up to our wider regional community to tell us what they want, and for us to listen and protect what they value.
  • The ARC aims to develop partnership and communication programmes to get our regional community actively involved in our work.
